In July, the main focus of Sigma-tau Foundation – Spoletoscienza – within the famous Festival of the Two Worlds of Spoleto renovates its interest in the National scientific debate. This year, the calendar for the 21st edition offers a gallery of encounters, meetings, lessons, debates at the most ancient venue presently renovated: the art, culture, theater festival of our country founded by Maestro Gian Carlo Menotti, today at its 52nd edition under the direction of Giorgio Ferrara.
In the traditional venue of San Nicolò, but this year even at the Frau Hall, Spoletoscienza meets its audience on the week-ends of July 4-5 to July 11-12
Energy, the World, the Body, Illnesses are the protagonists of “Energeticamente”, a mixture of traditional conferences and round tables alternated with new original proposals, along with music, feature film and TV footage, and acting.
The opening of Spoletoscienza 21st edition focuses on the vital and human aspect of energy as “fuel” for the body and for the body of every living being, from neurons to the muscle cells, to blood cells. Resources are in fact a typically bio-chemical theme that invests the most excellent intellectual resources and the medical-scientific research in an attempt to understand, with best accuracy, the functioning of the energetic core of the cell, the features of biological waste, the strategies for the optimization of the energetic supplying of each organism, starting from the relation between paleo-diet and evolutional nourishment, or from the damage that an energetic dysfunction determines in the nature of cancer and metabolic syndromes and, in general, in the process of aging. “The oxidizing damage on behalf of the free radicals – as Claudio Franceschi, immunologist and longevity researcher hosted in Spoleto asserts – is considered one of the main factors in the process of aging, therefore capable of determining the length of life. And the free radicals are generated most of all in processes through which the cell produces the energy necessary for its survival. These reactions take place specifically in the mitochondrion, cellular organisms specifically preset as “energetic centrals” through the formation of the ATP molecule.”
Among the guests invited and coordinated by Menotti Calvani, besides Dr. Franceschi, there’s Dr. Gianfranco Peluso, French cellular Biologist Jean-Claude Ameisen, as well as Francesco Negro, in the Sala Frau with his original conference amid music and medicine.
However, Energy, in periods of stability and growth, just as in periods of global crisis as the present, is one of the inevitable themes that questions all aspects of the lives of nations and people, together with that of the single individual. In these last years, the theme of sustainability of developmental models has been central due to the empirical data that testimony the environmental emergency. The theme of sustainability, of the adhesion to international protocols have blended with the major or minor dependence from foreign supplying sources of many Countries, Italy included, and with the difficulty of conjugating economical strategic necessities with environmental ones, while the nuclear files open again - in our country, as well.
For the closing of the Festival, Spoletoscienza presents a round table with Roger Pielke Jr., editor of Nature, and expert of the relation between Politics and Science of the Bolder University of Colorado; John Tierney, New York Times journalist; and Richard Tol of the Economic and Social Research Institute of Dublin.
