SCONFINAMENTI

project and production Change Performing Arts
creative directors Elisabetta di Mambro / Franco Laera

Contemporary art tends more and more to multimedia. Even in the first decade of our new century artists work at the border of many languages, inclining towards the production of works of total art, the result of a synthesis capable of developing a mixture of figurative arts, cinema, theater, literature, photography.
The contemporary artist seems to take, in part from the Renaissance model of Michelangelo and Leonardo who worked at 360, and in part from Wagner, who theorized and practiced Opera as a venue capable of reaching all languages of art. Such a trend developed continuously from the beginning of the last century, starting from the historic avant-garde: Futurism, Abstractionism, Surrealism and Dadaism. From the fifties onwards artists have felt the need to further abandon their specific art: get off the wall, get out of the screen, go beyond the space of the stage to reach the work as an installation capable of accommodating forms of intertwining of the different languages, therefore the result of assemblage and contamination of genres.
The project which starts this year with a prologue at the Rocca Albornoz - aims at documenting the work of artists already known on the international art scene, but it is also proposed within the framework and spirit of Spoleto Festival of 2Worlds which is traditionally open to the experimentation and dialogue between different languages of art, of being the author for new discoveries and finally to cross borders becoming performances, concerts, encounters and screenings for the entire period of the Festival.

Shoja Azari
THE KING OF BLACK
2013, HD video color, sound, 24´
Courtesy Leila Heller Gallery, New York
The video The King of Black mixes the techniques of silent film, mages of the precious Persian miniatures, theatrical action and digital animation. The story is based on the epic poem Haft Paykar (the seven beauties) written in 1197 by Nizami of Ganja, the greatest epic writer of Persian literature who with his poems offered matter to all the miniaturists of the following centuries.
The morality tale of Nizami describes the impatience of a prince who, in violation of the appeal to the perseverance of one of his seven wives, is forced to leave the garden of Eden.
Behind the allegory of the ancient poem, the artist Shoja Azari born in Shiraz and a resident of New York, criticizes the social and political reality of his country.

Peter Greenway
THE ICE TIME
40,000 years in 4 minutes
2012, 5 media players and 5 monitors, 4´, color
editing Irma de Vries, soundtrack Huibert Boon, programming Matthew Massocco
"We can certainly state that very soon there will be a re-dislocation of the lands that are covered since the oceans are rising more and more. And there will soon be a flood followed by ice. We can say that humanity is a type of life forced to bloom during the short intervals between two ice ages.
Meteorological changes are slow, steady and devastating for the evolution of the species. Here in five sequences there is the story of the next scheduled event condensed in four minutes. Forty thousand years in four minutes".
This is how the Welsh filmmaker describes his latest installation, with a painter’s forming and vocation, who - preaching the death of movies has became a pioneer of crossover amongst film language, painting, literature and new digital technologies.

Ahmet Gneştekin
BELEK (Memories)
2012-2013, video projections and sound
On the walls and on the floor of a darkened room, images dated between 1909 and the present days scroll in sequence, including the massacre of the Armenians in Adana and the current events of Taksim Square. A soundtrack synchronically releases original voices and sounds that refer to those events.
In this way, the Turkish artist Ahmet Gneştekin questions our collective memory, and that of his people, on the amount of violence and threats to human rights that have taken place in a just over a century in that part of the world.

Shrin Neshat
THEATER IS LIFE. LIFE IS THEATER.
Don’t ask where the love is gone.
Photography by Luciano Romano
2012 B/W, 9 giclee prints on Hahnemhle and Dibond paper
Commissioned by the Comune di Napoli/Stazione Toledo / Metropolitana di Napoli spa
After residing in Naples to compete the creation of the Toledo underground station designed by Oscar Tusquets with one of his works too, Shirin Neshat has set nine actors and actresses of the Neapolitan underground theater in dramatic black and white images. There are nine bodies that seem to force the walls of a prison with no place or time. "I am seeking the universality that can apply to everyone," says the American artist of Iranian origin. "Beauty must be combined with emotion, with social and political commitment. Beauty alone remains an aesthetic standard and commitment a cry. Only united they become something we can call art".

Sri Astari Rasjid
UNDERCOVER, UNDERWEAR, UNDERWORLD TROOPS
Soundtrack by Rahayu Supanggah
2013 fiberglass, stainless steel mesh & mixed media
The constant concern of the artistic work of the Indonesian Sri Astari is to reread the traditions of the cultures of Java and its symbolism through the lens of the intrusive life style of Western origin which has quickly changed the scenario of values in the social life of country.
In particular, the focus of her criticism is the position of women, with all its contradictions, between the roots of tradition and overflowing consumerism. But this criticism often takes the form of humor, as in the representation of the seven figures suspended between ancient elegance and erotic innuendoes, ambiguously in counterpoint with the soundtrack of Rahayu Supanggah.

Sislej Xhafa
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHT
2013 blanket, newspaper, clothes
Courtesy Galleria Continua, San Gimignano / Beijing / Le Moulin
A body is lying on the ground, entirely hidden by an old blanket. We do not know who he is, if he is sleeping or if he´s drunk, if he is resting or if he’s dead. The title which the Kosovian artist gave the work does not help us solve the enigma and indeed helps to reinforce our doubts being casual spectators. But also innocent? Sisley Xhafa points his finger right at the complexity of the political, economic and social reality of contemporary reality and does this with simple means, at times with irony and at times with acid mockery, which is not easy to classify. "Reality is stronger than art - says Sisley Xhafa - As an artist, I do not care to reflect reality, but I want to question it and make it a matter of discussion".
