IMMUNOLOGY: A LIFE-SUPPORT SYSTEM

curated by Vincenzo Barnaba, Angela Santoni and Alberto Mantovani

Immunology is one of the most fascinating scientific fields, owing to its complexity, its continuously outstanding discoveries that also play a vital role for other fields in biomedicine and for its cultural and intellectual foundation: the immunologic hypotheses and theories made immunology an example of the strict link between biological mechanisms and thought. It is no surprise that last year three Nobel prizes were awarded to immunologists.
Immunologists study cellular and molecular events of the immune responses that fight infections and tumors (vaccine), as well as the mechanisms by which chronic inflammatory disorders (autoimmune diseases, allergies, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, etc ...) emerge. From immunology, researchers learn how to fight infections, cancer, and chronic inflammatory diseases and this has an obvious impact for the protection of human health. Immunology is a cross-science, which at clinical level, is involved in a variety of specialties such as rheumatology, gastroenterology, pediatrics, infectious diseases, cardiology, and many more. So, Immunology is fundamental not only for its research of the mechanisms of various pathologies but also for new and innovative treatments for those diseases.
