SPOLETO FESTIVAL OF 2WORLDS IS PRESENTED IN MILAN

The Festival will be in Milan with the last stop of the national tour for the show The Human Voice/The Beautiful Indifferent by Jean Cocteau with Adriana Asti at the Piccolo Teatro Grassi premiering on May 20th at 19:30 and on stage until May 25th. The two famous plays, based on the theme of abandonment and loneliness in love affairs, are presented one after the other under the prestigious direction of Benot Jacquot, revealing unique and intense proof of fine acting dedicated to Jean Cocteau. The show, co-produced by the Festival of Two Worlds and the Teatro Metastasio Stabile of Tuscany, in collaboration with Mittelfest 2013, enjoyed a successful debut in Spoleto last July.
This is an opportunity to enjoy a preview of the Festival of Spoleto, one of the most important international cultural events which has treated its audience, every year for over half a century, to 17 days of great entertainment with operas, concerts, ballets, recitals, plays, along with film festivals, workshops, conferences, meetings, prizes, contests, special events, and a close look at contemporary art, as well.
At its 57th edition, the Festival confirms its original backbone as a historic meeting place of different cultures and still today offers an established showcase to great and emerging artists alike, but above all, it is an inexorable workshop of original productions.
Under the guidance of Giorgio Ferrara, in his seventh year as artistic director, the Festival of Spoleto once again opens its unique venues where, every summer, the great stage arts of the international scene converge. An encounter that holds the thread of the conversation between past and present, avant-garde and tradition, new generations and mythical figures, remaining faithful to the quality and excellence of the proposals and opening its borders to all the most vital and interesting artistic expressions.
Spoleto57 opens with the staging of a triptych of three short operas: La mort de Cléoptre by Berlioz, La dame de Montecarlo by Poulenc, Erwartung by Schnberg with the Orchestra Sinfonica of Milan "Giuseppe Verdi" conducted by John Axelrod directed by Frèdèric Fisbach and with August Strindberg’s drama, Danza di morte directed by Luca Ronconi, and closes with the Final Concert "The American Musical from the 40s and 50s", an evening dedicated to the most famous musicals of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner, with the soprano June Anderson and the baritone Paulo Szot, conducted by Wayne Marshall and accompanied by the RAI National Symphony Orchestra. Amongst the great International presences, we can mention Robert Wilson, Tim Robbins, Gerard Depardieu, Isabelle Huppert, Anouk Aimée, the Berliner Ensemble, Christoph Marthaler, Leonard Eto; for the grand dance, the San Francisco Ballet and the Paul Taylor Dance Company; from the Italian scene, we have the two great interpreters Adriana Asti and Franca Valeri, along with Luca Barbareschi, Paolo Graziosi, Marina Confalone, Micaela Esdra, Giovanni Crippa, the directors Paolo Magelli, Giancarlo Sepe, Walter Pagliaro; for the music Andrea Griminelli, Edoardo Bennato, the Musical Band of the Carabinieri, the extraordinary participation of Riccardo Muti, and much more; from the world of culture and art, Piero Tosi, Corrado Augias, Giovanni Villa, Ernesto Galli della Loggia, Massimo Bernardini, Paolo Mieli, Achille Bonito Oliva.
In recent years, the Festival has continued to grow, becoming more and more interpreter of our time, in the awareness and hope that art can and must do its part: stimulate the imagination through theater, elevate the spirit through music, convey light-mindedness through dance. It has not neglected the increasingly recognized importance of the dimension and economic value of culture, and the numerous activities that are closely related to the artistic production.
The Festival of Spoleto has the support of those who strongly believe in the forcefulness and courage of culture. First of all, from the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and Tourism that fervently continues to invest in the Festival; the institutions of the territory - Umbria Region, Province of Perugia, Town of Spoleto, Chamber of Commerce of Perugia - participating in a spirit of close and prolific collaboration; the private Foundations - Cassa di Risparmio di Spoleto Foundation and Carla Fendi Foundation - new protagonists of Italian patronage; the banking institutions - Intesa Sanpaolo, Casse di Risparmio dell’Umbria, Banca Popolare di Spoleto - that give their precious support; the businesses that make a remarkable effort to maintain their commitment to partnership and sponsorship in particular Eni, Monini, Mercedes-Benz Italy.
Within this perspective, the Festival of Spoleto also makes a contribution so that art lovers needn’t do without, so that they can continue to cultivate their passions and become part of a virtuous circle that must not break. Therefore, besides the numerous promotions already active on purchasing tickets, the Festival of Spoleto proposes a special gift of 5,000 tickets at the cost of 1 €, for the public that is worse off in this period of crisis.

On May 19th, 2014 at 12:00 pm, the artistic director of the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Giorgio Ferrara, presented the program of the 57th edition in Milan at the Sala del Grechetto of Palazzo Sormani in the presence of the Councillor for Culture of the City of Milan, Filippo Del Corno.
