After ten years of twinning between Spoleto and Schwetzingen, the two sister cities celebrate the anniversary with the exhibition "Schwetzingen by Horst Hamann" in Spoleto. The exhibition features images of the famous castle gardens and other cityscapes.
Cosmopolitan Horst Hamann is at home in the world metropolises, yet he learned the art of photography in the tranquility of Mannheim, the little Palatine town where he was born; his pictures show a range of romantic and picturesque sights through the characteristic monumental nature of his famous "verticals".
The Schwetzingen Palace Garden, one of the most important 18th-century European garden creations, has always enthralled Horst Hamann with its architectures and sculptures uniquely combining the beauty of art and nature.
The photographs show the artist’s personal discovery of mystical places and magical moments, in the palace garden and in the city of Schwetzingen alike. In some photographs, deep horizons and dramatic sky constellations reveal a Romantic world view. In other photographs, clearly defined shadows of natural or architectural features achieve an image of perfect harmony, the sign of the photographer’s distinctive creative process.
Horst Hamann was defined "genius of composition" in a review by the New York Times. He’s not constructing: in the surrounding environment he can perceive the ideal proportions, the ideal viewing angle and the moment of ideal light conditions. This results in a "characteristic perfection", the harmonious interaction of line references and their rhythm, precisely capturing highlights and deep shadows.
