The 4th Regiment of Carabinieri on Horseback, successor of the glorious historical and horse-riding traditions of the Carabinieri Corps, will execute the famous Historic "Carousel", horseback riding recital and synthesis of training achieved by horses and horsemen of the Corps.
The 4th Regiment of Mounted Police constitutes the only and last specialized Regiment of the Italian Armed Forces entirely on horseback.
As successor of the glorious historical and horse-riding traditions of the Carabinieri, the Regiment conducts activities for the institutions, protection and order of public security, principally through the use of quadrupeds of the Force. Thus mounted patrols are carried out in green urban areas, archaeological sites, in the vicinity of sensitive targets and in inaccessible areas of the entire national territory; they are involved in the implementation of public order and services of honorary representation at major institutional seats. In addition to these activities, the Regiment, along with the Squadrons Group, takes part in the famous Historic Carousel: horseback riding recital and synthesis of training achieved by horses and horsemen of the Force.
The Historic "Carousel" was inspired by the ancient tournaments for knights of the 1300s, and in particular it celebrates the historical Battle of Pastrengo which took place in the homonymous fight on April 30, 1848, during the First Italian War of Independence.
The Historic Carousel of the Carabinieri is a fluid and harmonious interchange of riding figures conducted by squadrons with great skill and expertise in different formations whose key component is the quadrille. Four pairs, side by side, execute the figures moving like just one horse conducting each change of direction and pace with precision in order to keep the quadrille compact and orderly. The harmonious succession of figures, the layout and the composure of horses and riders are the result of the intense daily training that is carried out by the Carabinieri of the Regiment to reach the highest expression of the duo.
On April 1, 1963 during the restructuring of the Mobile Departments of the Corps, the 4th Regiment of Carabinieri on horseback was established, framed within the XI Mechanized Brigade of Carabinieri. Since October 1st 2007, the Regiment has reinstated the ancient name of the 4th Regiment of Carabinieri on horseback.
On April 30, 2015, for the anniversary of the Battle of Pastrengo, during a ceremony attended by the Commanding General of the Carabinieri Corps-General of Armed Corps Tullio Del Sette, the Chief of the Defence Staff, General of Armed Corps Claudio Graziano decorated the Banner of the 4th Regiment of Carabinieri on horseback with a Bronze Medal of Merit for praiseworthy institutional activities carried out by the Department from 1963 to 2015. Today the Regiment is composed of 273 policemen and 239 horses. The Fanfare on Horseback of the 4th Regiment is the oldest music department entirely mounted, successor of the initial 12 trumpeters who established the first Fanfare on Horseback in Turin in 1820. The group also performs on its own for important events in Italy and abroad and is an integral part of the Historic "Carousel" which accompanies the Squadrons in their evolutions.
