If History is written by the victors, rock’s one is no exception. In this case, it concerns men, holders of an ancestral power they struggle sharing. As a result, in order to unbolt of Rock’s doors, female pioneers had no choice but to dare and to shatter the image they were restricted to. Not all women who have tried made it. Those who managed to get on stage and keep up on it, such as Brenda Lee, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith and their heiresses, allowing themselves the right to be who they want, able of excess, with their own voice, their own bodies, their way of living, even playing on genders.
Women in Rock have done much more than simply renew the stage, they shook western societies with rage and courage. Blowing up the tight gendered constrain in where bodies were suffocating before the birth of Rock, they enabled men to play with their own femininity, from Mick Jagger to David Bowie and Lou Reed. My Ladies Rock narrates a rock less exposed toglory than men’s one, but as much fertile, if not more thrilling as it is linked with the current fight for women’s rights which is far from being over.
