On Wednesday, December 26th at 6:30 pm the Teatro Caio Melisso Spazio Carla Fendi hosted the screening of the Film Opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" written and created by Gian Carlo Menotti in the 1950s for NBC TV, and conducted by Thomas Schippers. Introduction with Umberto De Augustinis, Giorgio Ferrara, Alessio Vlad, Antonella Manni and Andrea Tomasini.
The opera by Gian Carlo Menotti Amahl and the Night Visitors represented a much loved Christmas TV tradition during the 1950s. Broadcast live every year, starting from its first performance in 1951, Amahl was the first opera commissioned for television and the first to take full advantage of the potential of the new means of communication. With a libretto (in English) of remarkable lyrical beauty, written by the same composer, and a cast of magnificent actors and singers, Amahl achieved the objective of the founders of the NBC Opera Theater perfectly, which was to "bring authenticity and realism into the opera". Created specifically by Menotti for an audience of children, this work was for many an enlightening introduction to the world of opera as a musical theater. It still remains an enchanting, very evocative, and finally, deeply moving experience.
