’SANTO CHIODO IN SPOLETO’ GUIDED TOURS TO THE HOSPITAL OF THE WORKS OF ART DAMAGED BY THE EARTHQUAKE

The project to build the Santo Chiodo Depot started after the 1997 earthquake, with the aim of providing the area with an anti seismic structure, equipped with adequate equipment (racks, shelving units, chests of drawers, archive area, environmental control, spaces for laboratories and offices, burglar alarm systems) to house works of art found in risk situations due to natural disasters. The Depot was completed in 2008, and following the seismic period that began in 2016, about 7,000 works of art and hundreds of drawers containing archaeological material, mainly from museums, churches and palaces of the Valnerina, were hospitalized. Upon arrival the works are safeguarded eliminating sources of degradation, followed by conservative cataloging, the execution of minimum maintenance interventions and the establishment of future restoration actions according to need..
The itinerary of the visit includes both the depot and the first aid laboratory. An experience that highlights the great cultural heritage which has come from the Valnerina, and gives an idea of the enormous work carried out by the staff of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, with the help of the Police, the Fire Brigade, and the Civil Protection and its volunteers, to save what can be saved. A first-hand experience to see the care, passion and competence involved to help the distressed territories by reestablishing their soul and the symbols of their civilization.
