“In the early 1960s - wrote Giovanni Toscano and Sandro Morichelli - the Festival was already a consolidated reality. Difficulties were present, especially the economic ones, but the common will to move forward was manifested. One evening in the City Council the doors were literally closed: we cannot leave from here, until we find the money for the Festival. Spoleto was becoming an important reference point for Italian and international culture and it was impossible to turn back”.
For the third Festival of Two Worlds, the longest in the history of the event (June 8 - July 10, 1960), the final concert in Piazza del Duomo will be one of the shows that Rai TV decides to broadcast live for the first time, together with the opera “The Prince of Homburg” by Hans Werner Henze from the Teatro Nuovo. For recorded television broadcasts, the RAI TV also chooses the inaugural opera “La Bohème”, broadcast “on the national program at 9:05 pm on June 9” and the “Chamber concerts given at the Caio Melisso”, also called aperitif concerts and then “Noontime Concerts”, considered the main innovation of that year. In order to adapt its image and services, the city is strongly committed and for the third edition of the Festival, the Municipal Council of Spoleto unanimously deliberates a contribution of 2,000,000 Lire. In the same way, the role of the local Tourist Information Office takes shape in this decisive phase and is widely recognized by the local press. For the first time, the natives of Spoleto who are residents in Rome deal with the opportunity to set up an association "Amici del Festival", which will later be called "Amici di Spoleto".
On the occasion of the sixty-second edition of the Festival of Two Worlds, pursuing a project launched three years ago, we will recall the extraordinary moments of the town´s history across a conference, a book, an exhibition so as to re-read the origins of the event, understand its legacy in the present and trace scenarios for the future.
