Church of San Pietro extra moenia
Appointment in front of the church

The origin of the church, located on the slopes of the Monteluco mountain, is very ancient as a building dedicated to St. Peter had already been built on the site at the beginning of the fifth century by Bishop Achilleo, who had transferred the relics of St. Peter’s chains to Spoleto.
The rebuilding took place between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, but at the beginning of the fourteenth century it suffered considerable damage caused by the clashes between Guelph and Ghibelline factions and immediate restoration was needed, started in 1329 but which proceeded slowly until the beginning of the fifteenth century .
A further renovation was carried out, on the model of the Cathedral, at the end of the seventeenth century. The façade, which remains almost entirely the original one, is one of the best examples of Umbrian Romanesque. It is decorated with a beautiful sculptural decoration created between the 12th and the 13th century, which depicts religious scenes and allegorical fables reinterpreted in a Christian key but taken from ancient culture and medieval bestiaries.

I Franciscan itinerary: from the letter of Saint Francis to Brother Leo to the first Franciscan settlements in the town.
Appointment in Piazza della Libertà

The historical connection between Saint Francis and Spoleto is well known: "Nihil jucundius vidi valle mea spoletana" is the phrase attributed to the Saint, who praises the beauty of the landscape that surrounds the town. For Francesco it was one of the most joyful representations of the created and of God. It was precisely in Spoleto that his so-called "first conversion" took place, when, around 1204, he set off from Assisi to Lecce, and moved on to Jerusalem, along with other Christian knights. His visit to Monteluco is well-known as it was already the ancient seat of a vast eremitical community from the 5th century. A primitive Franciscan cenacle was also founded on the top of the mountain and at the boundaries of the ancient "sacred wood" in 1218. The itinerary starts from Piazza della Libertà, towards the area where the church of Sant´Apollinare was located -  the first Franciscan settlement in Spoleto. Then to the Duomo to see the authentic letter of St. Francis, one of only two manuscripts of the Saint which exists in the world. Next on to Piazza Campello and from here to Colle Sant’Elia      IN ITALIANO AGGIUNGERE L’APOSTROFO         to admire the remains of the ancient Franciscan church of Sant´Elia, where the blessed Simone da Collazzone, a Franciscan friar, follower of Francis, died in 1250. Finally we will visit the complex of the former convent and church of the apostle Saint Simon the Zealot, actually built in honor of the blessed Simon.

Silla substructions and Church of Sant’Eufemia
Appointment in Piazza del Duomo

From the mighty substructions of the ancient Palazzo della Signoria, which recalls the great architectural works with Gattapone’s motifs of arches and pillars, the primitive terraced topography of prestigious Spoletium is retraced, discovering the ancient Silla Substructions of the first century B.C. Hidden by other buildings in via dello Spagna, today the Silla substructions represent a visible and legible desire to build a mighty fortified portico structure capable of supporting a vast, artificial, upper terrace, on the steeper north side of the hill.
