A timeless jewel of world ballet a stage work dealing with three great themes: life, love and death. Back in 1997 Romeo and Juliet was the first ballet the world-famous choreographer Youri Vàmos created for Ballett Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He set the tragic love story from the Italian Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, i.e. the period when Sergei Prokofiev composed the work. The sheer joie de vivre and humanity of its characters, wittiness, tempo and excitement permeate the entire ballet amid extremely impressive and poignant love scenes. The choreographer has primarily conceived this ballet as the story of two young people who in spite of their youth and naivety abide by their deepest feelings regardless of the consequences. The powerful emotions of the two lead characters require from the dancers acting abilities of the highest order, to say nothing of mastery of extremely exacting dance technique.
