SECRET AND UNDERGROUND SPOLETO

XLVI ORGAN FESTIVAL LUIGI ANTONINI

association Amici di Spoleto Onlus

music coordinator of the Rassegna d’Organo Luigi Antonini Paolo Sebastiani

The Organ Festival Luigi Antonini pursues the enhancement of the antique Italian organ’s features in the context of a territory which boasts valuable specimens; in this edition compositions for harpsichord and voice will also be presented. It will trace a path across typical pages of its relative musical literature, with authentic recapturing of the past thanks to the absolute prominence of the artists involved, even world famous, and to the peculiarities of the chosen instruments.
The music coordinator of the festival is Maestro Paolo Sebastiani, Professor in Theory of Harmony and Analysis at the Conservatory "A. Casella" in L’Aquila.

GUIDED TOUR | History and art in the monumental complex of San Ponziano and the surrounding area
The monumental complex, dedicated to the patron saint of Spoleto, is composed of the basilica and Benedictine monastery, in origin male, and afterwards female. In 1788 works upon a project by the Roman architect Giuseppe Valadier were carried out; however, previously the structure had undergone adaptation interventions for post-Tridentine reforms. The fašade kept the Romanesque appearance, as the portal was decorated with mosaic inserts and symbols of the evangelists around the rose window, the interior, ornated according to the new neoclassical taste was halved lengthwise to make room for the choir.
The crypt is decorated with frescoes of the fourteenth and fifteenth century and retains its original appearance. A recent finding revealed a tombstone of one of the sarcophagi arranged in the crypt: upon it, an engraved Langobard name, Agipertus; this is the first archaeologically ascertained Langobard from Spoleto. The monastery houses the skull of St. Pontian, which is still carried in procession on January 14. The relic is on display until the following Sunday during the celebrations for the feast of the martyr-saint. Following the Napoleonic suppression of 1810 and the constriction in 1860, numerous works of art and sacred grave goods owned by the monastery were alienated
