The title of the show is already explanatory of its contents Mussolini: I defend myself !. The authors imagined that a restored to life Benito Mussolini called to respond upon some crucial moments, could explain the political, historical and personal reasons of his behavior during his twenty years of power. It opens with the meeting of Piazza Sansepolcro in Milan in 1919 during which the Fasci di Combattimento (early Fascist Party) was founded; the murder of Giacomo Matteotti; the laws called ´fascistissime´ when a true dictatorial regime began; the racial laws of 1938; the entry into war in 1940 and finally, the meeting of the Grand Council of July 25, 1943 from where Mussolini emerged politically dead. Massimo Popolizio interprets the role of Mussolini, Professor Emilio Gentile, one of the top historians of fascism, is the prosecutor; Corrado Augias guides the discussion. It is interesting to note that much of the evidence put forward by Mussolini is drawn from the papers he himself had prepared for his defense before an American court which he hoped to consign himself to. Things then went very differently, as we know.
