Leonard Bernstein

In 1965, during his sabbatical year as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein wrote the Chichester Psalms for the homonymous Festival in that city’s cathedral. The choir, for which Bernstein set Hebrew texts taken from Psalms, joins forces with the organ, harp and percussion; vocal writing evocative of the liturgical tradition is infused with contemporary elements and jazz, bringing “something of West Side Story” to this music. Chichester Cathedral hosts the ashes of Gustav Holst, the English composer and conductor who became interested in Indian and Oriental mysticism between 1895 and 1914 — something evident from his many so-called “Sanskrit Period” works from the time, including his settings of the sacred hymns of the Rig Veda — one of the great Hindu texts — and of works by Indian poet and playwright Kālidāsa. Georgian composer Giya Kancheli’s Amao Omi (senseless war) is a tribute to the folkloric tradition of his home country. Like much of Kancheli’s music, the piece is filled with spirituality and contrasts, with the choral parts recalling Orthodox and Byzantine monastic chants alongside a soprano and saxophone quartet. Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin’s description of Kancheli as «an ascetic with the temperament of a maximalist, a sober Vesuvius» could hardly seem more fitting.
