Una relazione per un accademia - 2023

Synopsis

After the cinematic successes of Don't Be Bad, Jeeg Robot, Martin Eden and The Eight Mountains, winner of the Jury Prize at the 75th Cannes Film Festival and the David di Donatello 2023, in which he stars alongside Alessandro Borghi, Luca Marinelli arrives to Spoleto signing his first directorial venture with An Affair for an Academy, a theatrical adaptation of Franz Kafka's short story, a co-production of Festival dei Due Mondi and the Teatro Stabile dell'Umbria. to playing Rot Peter, the protagonist of the story, is Fabian Jung.

His name is Rot Peter the monkey to to whom Kafka gives voice in a short story in 1917. Peter is captured while with his pack; two bullets wound him. While in captivity, Peter realizes: he can imitate humans very well and secure his freedom. After five years, anthropologists find themselves listening to a monkey turned academic speaker. The text deals in grotesque terms with the plight of those who are forced to to live an existence that does not belong to them in order to conform to the dictates of society and derive a form of freedom from it: as the monkey himself recounts during the talk, it was not the sole pursuit of freedom to that suggested the solution but necessity.

Born in 1984, Fabian Jung originally from Münster, grew up to Leipzig and then studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of the Arts in Berlin. In 2012, his first meeting with Luca Marinelli lays the groundwork for the Kafka project. The careers of the two artists proceed and the idea remains on hold. Jung will take part to in various theatrical collaborations, from the Chemnitz ensemble to the Berlin Schaubühne, from the Staatstheater Saarbrücken to the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, to name a few. Jung thus returns to working with Luca Marinelli on Kafka's Italian-language text to premiere it at Festival dei Due Mondi.

Premiere

This text is a look. I was struck from this gaze, as from a profound and disruptive slogan of denunciation written, shouted on a wall. I stopped to observe it and tried to return my, our emotions. But absolutely I will not tell you what I think about this performance. I do not want to impose on you starting points of reflection, which it would be nice if it could be generated in you, as much of adherence as of rejection. What is important is that it makes noise, like a sound from decipher.
But this I can tell you: I hope we can to put a Hamletian mirror in front of you. Are you willing and disposed to to mirror yourselves? Are we willing and disposed to to mirror ourselves? I found in Kafka an ally, a friend, an ethical militant with whom I would gladly share a walk, an evening. We can only listen to him, but it would be nice to respond to him, to thank him. Perhaps a staging can compensate for this silence.
The first approach to a study of this play was to two years ago, to Berlin, when we started rehearsals with Fabian Jung, the actor you will see on stage. There it began, and it also ended. In this month spent to Spoleto, until today, we have reopened the work. We have put it again in doubt, and finally on stage. I would like to to thank the professional figures and souls I met during these days, who helped us and became fundamental companions and comrades. Enjoy the vision. And thank you.
