La MaMa Spoleto Open
African Music and Culture Workshop
African Music and Culture Workshop
Synopsis
This workshop, led by Senegalese singer Badara Seck, offers an introduction to African culture and anthropological history through music, designed for participants of all ages. Through a playful and participatory approach, it guides young people in discovering the figure of the griot—the guardian of collective memory and oral tradition in West Africa: a court bard, singer, musician, and storyteller, preserving history, genealogy, and community values.
A collective celebration and a space for cultural exchange, where participants sing, play, and dance together, activating body awareness, listening, and rhythm. Knowledge is transmitted experientially, fostering curiosity, dialogue, and active participation.
