Synopsis
As dancers, we are vulnerable on the stage; we are physically and psychologically naked and, as Martha Graham observed, “movement never lies.” In this time when toxic masculinity is normalized, perhaps we, as male dancers, can disrupt the narcissism with which men have moved on stage and through the world. Perhaps we can offer ourselves to the long silenced perspective of the female gaze. We can embody roles in which empathy shapes the use we make of our physical strength, and collaboration harnesses our competitive tendencies so that we challenge and encourage, rather than destroy. Our goal is to propose a collective masculinity that is not inherently problematic, but rather redefined through honesty and emotional range.
This project is a collaboration that seeks to evolve the art form, not unlike when the great ballets were first made. As Sons of Echo, we release the characters too long imposed upon us and submit to the resonant voices of our female creators. This title directly refers to the Greek myth where the nymph Echo is silenced by Narcissus (a metaphor for male self-absorption), positioning us as men willing to be shaped rather than centered, embracing a lineage of listening rather than asserting.
