Synopsis
Nicolas Altstaedt is a tireless explorer of the paths that traverse the history of music. In this concert, he makes his debut at the Festival dei Due Mondi with a program in which the Suites of Johann Sebastian Bach are mirrored in the monumental Sonata for solo cello by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, one of the leading figures of the Hungarian musical renaissance alongside Béla Bartók. A brilliant and daring artist, Altstaedt engages with a repertoire that ranges from Renaissance music performed on period instruments to collaborations with some of the greatest living composers, including Thomas Adès, Wolfgang Rihm, Sofia Gubaidulina, Jörg Widmann, and Liza Lim. Among his most acclaimed debuts are those with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Gustavo Dudamel at the Lucerne Festival, as well as his recital debut at the Frick Collection in New York. Also active as an artistic director and conductor, in 2012 he succeeded the legendary violinist Gidon Kremer at the helm of the Lockenhaus Festival, receiving the BBC Music Magazine Chamber Award 2020 and the Gramophone Award 2020 for his recordings at the Festival.
