Inspired by the game of chess, Zugzwang explores the dynamics of movement and relationship. Two individuals, brother and sister, find themselves as pawns inside a checkerboard, a labyrinth of figures containing all their possibilities of movement. With original music by Amedeo Monda, the show plays with chess metaphors, exploring concepts such as freedom, choice and destiny. Elisabetta and Gennaro Lauro are a couple of Italian artists specialized in contemporary dance. In 2023, they co-created and performed 'Zugzwang', which premiered nationally at the Teatro Civico di Schio. Elisabetta Lauro is associated with the Sosta Palmizi Association and studied at the Folkwang Universität der Künste, currently living in Berlin. Gennaro Lauro is a choreographer and dancer, with a strong interest in experimenting with movement and creating innovative body languages. Their artistic collaboration explores themes related to movement and the search for identity, as highlighted in the performance “Zugzwang”, where the chess concept is translated into body expression.
